BOCC repeals the Business License Tax

Nov 16 | BOCC repeals the Business License Tax

On October 25, 2016 the DeSoto County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) passed Ordinance 2016-19 repealing the Local Business Tax. On August 9, 2016 the BOCC directed the County Administrator and her staff to investigate the feasibility of repealing the Local Business Tax. The Planning and Zoning Division conducted a fiscal assessment of the costs of administering the tax receipt program and discovered the taxes collected were insufficient to cover the program costs for three of the five preceding fiscal years.

Commissioners also felt that the tax receipt rate was inequitable. For example, it charged a small retail business the same rate as a large retail establishment.

Repealing the tax is good for business and is in the best interest of DeSoto County residents. The repeal is effective immediately and no Local Business License Tax is due for FY 2016-2017.
