Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program provides grants to local governments and non-profit agencies to assist eligible low-income households in meeting the costs of home heating and cooling. The majority of the funds are used for utility payment assistance. The program can assist customers in paying their home energy expenses. Three categories of assistance exist:

    ►The home energy assistance category is designed to assist eligible low income household in meeting the cost of home energy.
    ►The crises assistance category is designed to assist eligible low income households in resolving or mitigating a home energy emergency.
    ►The weather related or supply shortage crises assistance category is designed to assist eligible low income households in resolving or mitigating a home energy emergency as declared by the governor.

Typically, applicants will need the following:

    ►Copy or original of energy bill.
    ►For all adult household members - Copy of identification (Photo I.D., driver's license.)
    ►Copy of Social Security's cards for all adult household members
    ►Copies of proof of income for every member of the household. Proof can be a letter from your employer or consecutive pay stubs showing gross income for at least the last thirty days, an income tax return or an award letter or letter from individual or agency from which income is received.
            S.S.A., S.S.I., V.A., Pension, Welfare, Child Support/Alimony, any other income source.
    ► Proof that you are receiving assistance from:
                    Food Stamps
                    Weatherization Assistance Program
