County Corner April 2016

In January, I shared that I would be doing a monthly article hosted by the Arcadian in effort to open communication between your local government and you.  Today, this article covers a couple of items that have seen significant public engagement, and we want you to know!

Change of Plans for April’s public hearing meeting agenda!

There are two development/Land Use related applications that were advertised to be heard by the Board of County Commissioners on April 26th, which will not be on the agenda as the result of requests from the applicants to continue their hearing dates.  Those items are:

1) Rezoning application from Bruce & Barbara Laishly from A-5 to RVC at 10531 SW Kissimmee Road.  The applicant’s representative has requested a continuance to the June 28th public hearing of the Board of County Commissioners.

2) Special Exception application for a House of Worship by the Islamic Center of Arcadia Inc. located at 2155 SW Poinsettia Avenue.  The applicant has requested an indefinite continuance.

On May 24th at 6:30PM, The Board of County Commissioners will consider adoption of two important Ordinances.  Both seek to establish minimum appearance standards and regulate only exterior features such as, cracking foundations, roof overhangs, stairs and porches, graffiti on buildings, condition of exterior doors and door jambs, windows and window frames and other similar exterior features.

One Ordinance, as drafted, would apply only to rental housing units.   The second Ordinance is similar in nature but applies to all structures along the main thoroughfares of US 17 and State Rd. 70. Both of the Ordinances cover the most basic exterior standards of the International Property Maintenance Code, which is a commonly adopted minimum building/housing code, which is much more detailed than the Ordinances the Board will consider in May.    While the Ordinances are similar in what features they would regulate, there are some key differences.

You can view the full text of each Ordinance on the County’s website at www.desotobocc.com .  You can find the Ordinances under “Proposed Regulatory Changes”, where you can also submit comments for the record.  Both of these Ordinances have been developed for Board consideration as the result of a series of events, including:  a number of community members who attended and actively participated in a series of Community Conversations over the past 3 years, recommendations from the Economic Development Advisory Committee and two independent studies relating to tourism and economic development.  Whether you support or oppose one or both of these Ordinances, share your opinion!  If you have any questions regarding the Ordinances, please feel free to contact the County Development Office at 863-993-4806.
