Arcadia Desoto County Jobs land sale surplus top story

DESOTO COUNTY, Fla. – Governor Rick Scott and the Florida Cabinet approved the sale of the former G. Pierce Wood Mental Health Facility near Arcadia in DeSoto County. The Power Auto Corporation purchased the property with plans to construct a manufacturing facility, driver training center, tactical training and a hotel. The proposed facility will bring between 80 and 120 jobs to the area during the first year, and up to 360 within five years.

Governor Scott said, “Hundreds of Floridians will be able to find a job and provide for their families because of Power Auto Corporation’s relocation to DeSoto County. Thanks to our improving economy, more companies are choosing to build their businesses in our state, and I look forward to seeing the great opportunities they will bring to Florida.”

The property is approximately 496 acres of surplus, non-conservation land, which includes 565,000 square feet of building space. DJJ took full responsibility of the property, and requested the property be surplused in July 2012. Power Auto Corporation submitted a qualifying bid of $2,500,101 to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of State Lands in November.

“I’m excited about this disposition,” said Kelley Boree, director of DEP’s Division of State Lands. “It is always pleasing to see corporate opportunities coming into the state and Power Auto Corporation has a multiuse development plan that is expected to offer top performance rally-car driver training and manufacturing facilities. Their new facility will offer tremendous economic benefits to DeSoto County in the future.”

Arcadia Desoto County racing rally car Southwest Florida wink news

ARCADIA, Florida – An old jail and mental health facility in Southwest Florida is going to be turned into a training ground to race cars.

“It’s gonna be fantastic for DeSoto County,” said Bob Miller, a DeSoto County Commissioner.

Rally car racing involves cars that can cost close to a half a million dollars.

“It’s a driving school for tactical ATVs, tactical military, rally cars and has some manufacturing components which is even more exciting so it will be bringing new people into the community to use this facility which will help generate economic impact to our community,” said DeSoto County Administrator Mandy Hines.

It will be at the old juvenile jail which before that was a facility where mental health patients were kept. Both were run by the state.

“The state may not be the best landlord for maintaining buildings,” said Hines. “We watched them over the past 12 years deteriorate and degrade to a point where they may no longer be serviceable.”

Realtor Mac Martin is excited, “We understand that it’s gonna become a destination for people of high net worth to come to little Arcadia to bring their sports cars and their families.”

The land is over 500 acres and went for $2.5 million. The same company reportedly tried to buy land in Collier County for the same purpose but ran into public resistance before deciding to move the idea to DeSoto County.
