Spring Lake Storm Water Study

Project Overview

The Spring Lake Stormwater Study will assess the periodic flooding of the residential neighborhoods in the Spring Lake Subdivision, Cedar Ave, and Branson Ave near Lake Suzy in DeSoto County. In previous years, stormwater levels have inundated roadways and portions of the road were washed out. The primary focus of this stormwater study will be the 2.5+/- mile drainage ditch that intertwines between these neighborhoods and ultimately discharges into the Peace River. This drainage ditch is the discharge point for the approximately 12 square mile Deep Creek Gully watershed, which borders Sarasota County, DeSoto County, and Charlotte County. The study will begin at the roadway box culverts on County Road 769 and Spring Lake Dr. The project area will be assessed to determine a recommended course of action for reducing flooding during the rainy season and large storm events. This study was made possible due to grant funding from the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) through the Cooperative Funding Initiative (CFI)

What is a Stormwater Feasibility Study?

A feasibility study looks at the problem and reviews multiple solutions. The results of the study will provide DeSoto County with the recommended course of action along with details on the financial obligations associated with project, outline of the permitting process for construction, and advise on additional funding options. The study will use current survey data along with an existing stormwater model for the Deep Creek watershed basin. Stormwater modeling is the best way to determine how possible changes to the ditch or culverts will affect the flow of stormwater and impact local residents. The study will look at a more localized project area than the previous watershed study that was completed in 2010. The grant funding will be used for an updated survey, coordination with the Southwest Florida Water Management District, stormwater modeling, public outreach, and a final report with findings and recommendations for improvements. DeSoto County has teamed up with Weiler Engineering Corporation to complete the study. By completing an in-depth investigation, DeSoto County can determine a feasible solution and plan for the financial obligations for the needed improvements. The study is a tool that will assist the County in applying for future grant funding for the implementation of the recommended improvement.

Project Schedule

The study is currently underway. Please refer to the graphic for a project schedule. The final report is expected to be completed in September 2018.

Public Outreach

This project impacts a large number of residents that live near the study area. Public coordination will be a crucial step in determining the best course of action for all parties. DeSoto County will be hosting a public meeting in order to update the public and gain insight into the public opinion. The public meeting will likely be held in August 2018 at a location close to the project site. If you would like to provide information, please email the individuals on the left.
